EasyTalk originates from 1998, in the wee hours of a Saturday morning
during Ramadan on Muslim Community Radio (Ramadan Radio at that time).
Initiated by a few bored (okay, wayward) guys who had nothing better to
do one Friday night after the boss (big brother) had gone home!
The playful gang had a great idea to go on air and play nasheeds and
have debates, discussions with those that were still waiting for their
massive late night meals to digest! They never knew it would run in to
thousands and thousands….
EasyTalk which was initially named as “The midnight, late night Islamic
show” (you see why we changed it…) was on air for only 10 minutes when
“big brother” called up to say he was listening! “We’re only testing the
reception…” was the cry from the studios followed by simultaneous
hysterical laughter!
But soon, they got their first caller…not knowing this was not an
advertised show requesting a nasheed, then another and another! “The
Phone lines are jammed” blurted one, “hey what about getting people to
text said the other”, “well we could give out my number, this is an old
phone and I wanna get rid of it anyhow”…with those famous words the
“textman” was born!
The team were hoarded, you had the “loudmouth”, the “Professor”, the
“I’m IN charge” and the “textman”…the team was born!
The show is about “Discussing topical issues and Islam without feeling
embarrassed or excluded or judged”, words of one. Basically, anything
and everything that our listeners feel is an issue for the Ummah. So
Akhis and Ukhtis what ever comes to your attention, bring it to our
notice! ‘Cos we’ll shout, scream, postulate and debate all with good
humour!
Not satisfied by that, the EasyTalk listeners decided that they wanted
to meet up for Eid celebrations! So Ramadan 1426 the presenters of
EasyTalk “agreed” to have their very first Eid gathering.
The gathering was packed out with over 200 people, it was a nervous
event for the first time both the listeners and the presenters got to
see one another!!!
Since the initial EasyTalk gathering the show has mutated in to a
regular thing, we now have the Daroon Forum for our bloggers, and
monthly gatherings to continue the dialogue! Write, listen, speak, hear,
ponder and act…these are the attributes that we espouse!
Let be known, let it be clear, the Daroon, Tashaiyah is still HERE!
