On Monday, a group of community leaders and activists launched the Check the Label campaign in time for Ramadan in Tower Hamlets, London. The campaign lead by Friends of Al Aqsa and Easy Talk aims to raise the importance of boycotting Israeli dates in the Muslim Community this Ramadan. Abdulla Almamun, co-ordinator for Easy Talk said ‘We will be ensuring that every mosque in Tower Hamlets, for the duration of the month of Ramadan, will be promoting the boycott in Friday sermons. Our members will be outside the mosques ,distributing literature to remind people not to break their fasts with Israeli dates. Shamiul Joarder from Friends of Al Aqsa, is positive the campaign will be a success ‘I believe that the majority of the community are not aware that the dates they are buying are from Israel. Once they are, I am sure they will support the boycott. I know the community will show the strength of its support for Palestine this Ramadan.’ Also present was Cllr Abjol Miah who said 'with Tower Hamlets having the largest Muslim population, it is a great place to start this campaign and raise awareness about Palestine and the on-going siege of Gaza' Friends of Al Aqsa will be hosting other meetings around London over the coming fortnight to launch the campaign in other areas.
